Tradition starts in the home, where generations pass down family teachings and customs. The act of wreath making has been around for centuries. According to Google, it dates back as early as 7th century B.C. Wreaths didn’t really become popular decorations until the 19th century, and even then they had a different name, welcome rings (should we bring this back?).

I’m not going to give you a history lesson. There are plenty of blogs out there that walk you through the years. But I will say this: wreaths have always meant something, including unity, renewal, the cycle of life, status, victories, remembrance, and more.

In Maine specifically, wreath making became popular in the 1700s with early settlers, and the state now produces up to 90% of the world’s balsam fir Christmas wreaths. It’s crazy how a tradition from Ancient Greece and Rome, olive leaf wreaths given to winners of the Olympic Games, has made its way into our homes and onto our front doors today.

Whitney Wreath often talks about traditions and family traditions. How does that tie into what was said above? Well, wreaths have always been symbolic, changing to fit the user’s needs.

In Maine, fresh balsam wreaths are an ode to the past, when mothers and daughters would spin a spool around branches of balsam. Using a wreath represents tradition. It represents family. It’s a gift to adorn your home with during the holiday season.

To some, it’s just balsam fir tied to a ring with a red bow. To us, it is so much more.
